Taking care of the guardians of the rainforest is the very first step in order to save it. Let There be Sight is a short film made inside a wild and very remote area of the Amazon where the hero doctors of the Brazilian NGO Health Expeditians go and build a hospital in tents for a week of free medical care service to the indigenous people. The film is a visual trip to raise awareness on the cataract problem and the high demand for health care to indigenous communities.

Director’s biography:

Juliana Affonso Ferreira is a young Brazilian documentary filmmaker and journalist who started telling stories through moving images in 2010 when she moved to London. After writing for Vogue Brazil after she graduated in BA Journalism she moved to London to have a new life experience and to deepen her skills with the camera. After studying at the London Film Academy and currently finishing her MA in Screen Documentary at Goldsmiths, Juliana hopes to reveal the behind the scenes of the womenswear brand Isolda in which she is a partner with her sister, Alessandra, and friend, Maya Pope.

However in order to find more meaning into her films and to add human content into her films, Juliana chose to leave all material belongings, desires and futility which not only the fashion industry which she works in but the whole cosmopolitan city environment that surrounds her as she was living in London and headed for one week of no material attachments. Let There Be Sight is a big project of Juliana who is very committed into bringing more awareness about the lack of health care system and treatment in Brazilian indigenous communities. The filmmaker spent one year planning the long trip to the Amazon and drawing out the story outline which she actualy wanted to change once she found herself inside the jungle and amazed by the important work of the group of doctors. That story, about the actual people who leave the comfort of their houses in the big city of Campinas – São Paulo and leave to more than 10 days of real adventure to give the native people of Brazil decent medical treatment is what thrills Juliana and will probably be the topic of her next film.
